Creative Brief #1

Identification: This is The Poster Mania, in contrast to postwar Polish Posters, which were patronized by Government in the 1960's-70's.

The Project & the Problem: This poster is of a cat, and above it in a weird typeface it says, "we are not mad,"this is a poster that was made to promote the movement of Hippies back in the 70's. It was made to catch your attention without striking up any prior attachment to what they are trying to poke at. It is low-key but yet creative.

The Client: This Poster was made for everyone who loved and was part of the movement at that time. I don't believe anyone was specifically hired to make this poster. This was made out of love for the movement of the times and it was ment to influence others to think and be moved. People now a days collect these posters as it resembles a look back in history of a time period that didn't last. As time keeps moving on and on I feel that these posters and designs will be called upon for influence.

The Audience: The Audience was intended to be for Hippies living in the San Fransisco Bay during the late 60's and 70's. Music and Drugs played a huge influence on this time period, so anyone that liked that lifestyle probably enjoyed this type of design work.

What is the core message: The core message is that the Hippie movement is alive and well contridictory to what anyone else says. The colors and abstract creations also communicate a sense of freedom and right of passage for everyone during that time period. As long as you made a poster that was vibrant to the eye whether on drugs or off people of that time where going to like it and be moved. It forced you to like it because it was so outrageous.

What is the Hoped- for outcome: The outcome is that people keep this movement moving. As long as people are influenced by these posters and designs and music, the movement will keep on moving. Every poster now a days that is created use and pulls from certain abstract designs of the 70's along with the color's.

What is the graphic Strategy: The way to design these types of posters is to find a way to strike emotion into people. Make people and viewers want to stop and take in what the heck is going on. There is so much chaos in the world if I can stop and make you take a break from your day to think, that is what I believe the artists intended.

Wood blocking Response

Wood type and movable text for print is a dying process according to the movie. They took us on a trip to visit the Hamilton Wood Blocking building in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. This was a laid back town that used to really rely and appreciate the work of Hamilton, but now time has passed and there are only a few older members that pass the tradition on to youthful interested wood blocking students.

When it comes to printing with movable text and wood, the print commonly comes out cleaner and more powerful in terms of color and texture. After watching this movie it really made me sad to see this art slowly slip away with the last people to ever learn it. I agree with the fact that print’s look way better and the fact that when you can touch the type and manipulate it’s design right in front of your face, you have the potential to create things that would be very hard to re-create or notice on the computer. The use of color is also easier to manipulate and play with, which is something I really like.

I would love to try and keep this dying art alive. I know that when I am able to spend more time on projects and am able to manipulate type in other ways that I wouldn’t normally see on the computer, my art would expand and be better I feel. The fact that it costs money and there is not much money coming back at it is obviously the biggest problem in this time and age. I enjoy doing things by hand and taking the longer process then the shorter way, so maybe one day I can buy a press and some wood block letters and try and keep this printing style alive in my own way. This movie inspired me a bit to look at different ways of creating, old or new!

About my Logo and Idea's

I decided to keep it green and go with a kit to help keep the earth fresh and thriving. My product is called Mother Nature's Med-Pack. This pack would include a bag to pick up yard waste, seeds to grow new flowers and plants, an instruction guide on how to be better to the enviornment, and a go green sticker.

I feel there needs to be more products and awareness towards keeping the earth clean. I have not seen anything like this yet, but there are similar products or ideas i'm sure. The logo is a drawing of what mother nature would look like(a girl with long flowing hair and many colors, embedded on a sun with the emergency sign behind it in green instead of the common red.

I feel this will catch people's atention and bring ,ore awarness to the cause. I would charge maybe $20 for this kit.

I would also like to post on the packageing where one can take recycleable bottles and cans, in return for money around peoria or the chicago area. I have noticed a problem around this area pertaining to this.

PG.5

I opened up the book to pg 5 and found cave drawings that were found in Africa over 200.000 yrs. ago. To me these pics are amazing considering how long ago they were created and with the lack of tools and canvas provided. These early day artists had to be the most innovative of any and all time in order to get their point across on their caves and to other viewers. Sometimes I sit at home and try and re-create the odd shapes of humans and animals that these people observed back in the day. It is really hard to re-create that beautiful texture of the cave walls mixed with the strange people and weird lines. Some people would argue this is not art or that a little 3yr could draw these, I laugh at these people and would ask them to try and create something as recognizable as a cave drawing with just a stick and ash. I would like to learn more about these drawings and perfect the art of ancient old cave like drawings in my own artistic way one day.
